    How can you help?

  • Classroom Partner – Volunteer is partnered with a classroom and commits to helping on a regular basis. The schedule will be created by the classroom teacher and volunteer. During this time, the volunteer may read with students, practice math skills, participate in science experiments, or help the teacher prepare for the days ahead.
  • “Wonderland” Partner – Volunteer spends time on a regular basis in the SENSE Reading Room, “Wonderland.” SENSE recently received a grant from the Carson Scholars Fund to build a “reading room” for its students. The room is a comfortable place for students to read independently and relax. In order for the room to be open, an adult must be in there to supervise.
  • Buddy Reader – Volunteer is partnered with a student in the primary grade levels. The volunteer and student read together on a regular basis. This time is devoted to helping some of our struggling readers gain confidence and build a relationship with a new friend.
  • Recess Partner – Volunteer goes back in time to everyone’s favorite part of school! The volunteer will join a group of students during recess. The purpose of this time is to mentor groups of students. This is a much more casual form of volunteering and offers a different way to spend time with kids.
  • Food Pantry Partner – Volunteer helps in the SENSE Food Pantry every other Thursday during the morning or afternoon time slots. The pantry is open from 8:30-10:00am and 3:30-5:00pm. This is a fantastic way to meet SENSE families!

    Volunteer Requirements

  • Background Check – Volunteer must fill out a Limited History Criminal Background Check. If a potential volunteer has an infraction come up on the check, the school administration will make a decision on whether or not the volunteer can spend time at SENSE.
  • Volunteer Waiver – Volunteer must complete a volunteer waiver.
  • Appropriate Behavior – Volunteer must sign a form committing to use appropriate behavior at SENSE. If this commitment is broken, the volunteer will be asked to leave the school premises.
  • Volunteer Training Session – Volunteer must attend a session with SENSE Outreach Coordinator. During this time, the volunteer will be equipped with knowledge and skills to work at SENSE.

  • Adopt-A-Classroom– Volunteer or organization picks up 2012-2013 School Supply List and chooses a grade level. The volunteer brings the newly purchased supplies into the classroom and delivers them to the students!
  • Adopt-A-Fieldtrip – Volunteer or organization funds a fieldtrip for SENSE students. Since we are an independent school, we are on a limited budget. Unfortunately, this directly affects fieldtrips. Please help our students touch, see, and experience Indianapolis!
  • Technology Team – Volunteer or organization partners with SENSE to improve our technology department. SENSE is in great need of a laptop cart for our students. Our goal is to teach them 21st century skills and technology is a crucial part!
